Troubleshooting Guide

Having problems with your avocado tree? Find solutions to common issues that affect avocado plants.

Yellow Leaves

Symptoms

Leaves turning yellow, starting from older leaves. May also see drooping.

Cause

Usually overwatering. Avocados don't like wet feet and are prone to root rot.

Solution

Let soil dry out between waterings. Ensure pot has drainage holes. Reduce watering frequency. Check roots for rot (brown, mushy roots).

Brown Leaf Tips

Symptoms

Brown, crispy edges on leaves. May progress inward.

Cause

Often caused by salt buildup from fertilizer or mineral buildup from tap water.

Solution

Flush soil with distilled water. Reduce fertilizer. Use filtered or rainwater if possible. Increase humidity.

Leaf Drop

Symptoms

Leaves falling off, especially after moving plant or in winter.

Cause

Stress from environmental changes, temperature fluctuations, or underwatering.

Solution

Keep plant in consistent conditions. Protect from cold drafts. Maintain regular watering schedule. Be patient - it may recover.

No Growth

Symptoms

Plant not growing or growing very slowly.

Cause

Insufficient light, wrong temperature, nutrient deficiency, or pot-bound roots.

Solution

Move to brighter location. Ensure temps are 60-85°F. Fertilize during growing season. Repot if roots are crowded.

Pests

Symptoms

Small insects on leaves, sticky residue, distorted growth, webbing.

Cause

Common pests include spider mites, mealybugs, scale, and thrips.

Solution

Isolate plant. Wipe leaves with soapy water or neem oil. For severe infestations, use insecticidal soap. Improve air circulation.

Root Rot

Symptoms

Wilting despite moist soil, yellow leaves, black mushy roots, foul smell from soil.

Cause

Overwatering combined with poor drainage. Fungal infection.

Solution

Remove from pot, cut away all rotted roots with sterile scissors. Repot in fresh, well-draining soil. Reduce watering. May need fungicide.
