Storage & Ripening Guide

Master the art of storing avocados. Learn how to keep them fresh longer and ripen them faster when you need them.

How to Store Avocados

Unripe Avocados

Counter at room temperature

2-7 days until ripe

  • Keep at room temperature (65-75°F)
  • Away from direct sunlight
  • Check daily for ripeness
  • Never refrigerate unripe avocados

Ripe Avocados

Refrigerator

2-3 days

  • Refrigerate only when perfectly ripe
  • Store in crisper drawer
  • Can extend life by a few days
  • Bring to room temp before eating for best flavor

Cut Avocados

Refrigerator, wrapped

1-2 days

  • Keep the pit in the unused half
  • Brush with lemon/lime juice
  • Wrap tightly with plastic wrap
  • Store cut-side down in airtight container

Speed Up Ripening

Paper Bag Method

2-4 days

Place avocado in a paper bag and fold closed. The bag traps ethylene gas which speeds ripening.

With Bananas/Apples

1-3 days

Add a banana or apple to the paper bag. These fruits produce extra ethylene gas.

Flour Method

2-3 days

Bury the avocado in a bowl of flour. The flour traps ethylene gas close to the fruit.

Newspaper Wrap

2-4 days

Wrap individual avocados in newspaper and keep in a warm spot.

How to Freeze Avocados

  1. 1Cut avocados in half and remove pit
  2. 2Scoop out the flesh
  3. 3Mash with 1 tbsp lemon juice per avocado
  4. 4Place in freezer bags, removing air
  5. 5Label with date and freeze
  6. 6Use within 4-6 months for best quality

Pro Tip: Frozen avocado is best for smoothies, guacamole, and baking. The texture changes slightly after freezing, so it's not ideal for slicing.
